River Ecology In the context of implementing the EU Water Framework Directive, we determine the ecological status of Austria’s running water systems by the performance of the fish fauna. For this we have developed an evaluation system and a database (Fish Database Austria) regarding a standardized field methodology. We are conducting long term studies that give a detailed insight into fish population dynamics and enable us to produce progressive management strategies. Additionally we also investigate the relationship between climate change and fish populations.
Fish Health and Aquaculture We carry out investigations on fish diseases and water quality, and develop treatment suggestions. We contribute to extensive health precautions in aquaculture, collect information on the causes of fish mortality and carry out appropriate analysis. In addition, we provide advice on pond management for the carp and trout farming industry. Research Fishery Kreuzstein Our experimental fishery at Kreuzstein/Mondsee propagates and raises native and ecologically important stock fish for Austrian water bodies, which can be used to maintain or restore ecological functionality. A distinctive feature of this plant is the feeding of hard-to-raise fish species with live zooplankton.
Lake research An important part of our work is the research and assessment of the fish ecological state of the large Austrian lakes based on standardised methods. Further we analyse the physico-chemical state of lakes continuously since the 1960ies with a special focus on lakes affected by chloride discharge. We are also working on the standardisation of fish surveys on lakes, develop concepts for sustainable fisheries management and study especially the ecology of coregonid and arctic charr stocks of Austrian lakes. |
