Welcome at the Institute for Water Ecology, Fisheries and Lake Research!
The institute is part of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Environment and Water Management. The main tasks are assessing the fish ecological state of the standing and running water bodies of Austria, physico-chemical long-term analyses of lakes, hydroacoustics, fish medical service and the development of standardised fishery methods. Our research, experimental and consulting activities are therefore directed towards an ecologically sustainable use of these waters for fisheries, and serve to preserve the diversity of native fish species and protect fish health. The Institute is also a centre for professional/vocational education and further education, and offers expert knowledge, advice and information for Austrian fisheries. Part of the Institute is the fish hatchery at Kreuzstein and a boarding school for fishery trainees. The journal “Oesterreichs Fischerei” (“Austrian Fisheries”) is edited at the institute and published eight times a year. |
